You Didn't Mean to Leave

about

This is a different song for me. From the moment I had the idea, it felt like a piano, strings driven ballad- and that's what we have.

I enlisted some great musicians to help me build this too.

The song is for anyone who has felt loss and grief. In my case, for my sister Jayne. I hope its also about memories, love and hope too because we have to treasure all that while we deal with the minutiae of our daily lives.

None of us mean to leave- it just kind of happens, and there are so many reasons why too.

I hope it has some resonance for people that hear it, and it would be wonderful if it could provide any measure of comfort.

I wanted to find a way to help an appropriate charity with any proceeds from sales of the song. My sister JAyne paid the ultimate price for her struggles with mental health and I know she would be thrilled that any proceeds from sales of this song will go to the Archway Project in Halifax.

The Arch-Way Project is a charity based in Halifax, set up for the purpose of increasing the health and well-being of local communities, especially those living with mental health issues. This includes people on the autistic spectrum, adults with profound mental health problems and the elderly living with or at risk from dementia and those who feel lonely or isolated. We use music, art, beauty therapy and exercise as vehicles to engage with these vulnerable people; teach new skills, build confidence and self-esteem and help people manage their mental health more effectively, in an alternative and non-clinical setting.

They also helped my late Mother-in-Law June when she was living at home with dementia.

lyrics

You Didn't Mean to Leave

Intro instrumental chorus

Life could have stopped you on your way to heaven
The world needs dreamers, and kind souls
You can never replace the ones who are taken
But now I'm always failing to fill that hole.

Chorus.

You didn't mean to leave
You had so much to give
And a world of happiness you created to
live.
And as the years roll by I miss you more
Although the heart often stops to grieve
One thing I know
you didn't mean to leave

We were
Different but so alike
And We knew each other so Very well
but how were we to know
We'd both do time in hell

Instrumental chorus

The brightest days as children we spent together
Laughing and sharing every day
We couldn't have known what lay in front of us
But maybe we could have found a way

Chorus X2

about

Emma Gee Flowers UK

My music comes from the heart- one that contains love, doubts, burning principles, anger, and hope.
It's country, blues, Americana, with a smattering of 70s pop. Whatever works to tell the story.
I write because I must. I hope others feel something in my songs too.
I'm originally from Birmingham, England, via Dublin, Ireland, but who knows where my travels will take me.
